Reading the desk…The road
Hartnel L. Henry — Sky High the Mau Mau — is a Jamaican Rastafari percussionist, singer, producer and label founder whose road runs from Kingston's ska, rock steady and reggae days to decades on tour with the Marley family.
Sky High the Mau Mau is the stage name of Hartnel L. Henry, a Jamaican Rastafari percussionist, singer, producer and label founder. He came from the Jamaican countryside into Downtown Kingston at thirteen in 1967, through ska, rock steady and reggae, and founded the Sky High Label in 1974. He toured as tour manager and road manager with the Burning Spear crew in the late 1970s and 1980s, travelled the world with Rita Marley and Ziggy Marley and the Melody Makers from 1981, brought Tenor Saw to England in 1985, and has been tour manager, road manager and personal emcee for Julian Marley and Damian "Jr. Gong" Marley since 1997. His releases include Rastaman Passing By (2014), SkyHigh In Dubland Vol. 1 and Marcus Garvey Chant Pt. 2 (2022), the Roll On EP (2025) and the sixteen-track compilation Journey Is a Journey (2026). His books, Life Journey Picture Book and Life Is A Journey, collect more than 1,000 photographs and over sixty years of stories in his own words. In 2026 he opened the Music Business Hub at skyhighmau.com, where artists and venues manage themselves and bid for each other's nights.
